WLAN / GSM roaming

Transat Technologies, backed by chipmaker Intel, is the newest entry into the business of securing smooth integration between Mobile Networks and WLAN Data networks. Working on software that allows authentication and billing of WLAN services via sim-cards (and other smartcards) they are just one more company in the rising business of integrating these different wireless data technologies.

And operators are listening. This plays into the assumptions of most major mobile operators that WLAN services can either kill or save the massive 3G investments. The operators need to offer compelling services such as one-point-service, roaming and billing, or be severely hurt by emerging, cheap wireless networks, run bu community groups and/or WLAN start-ups.
