W-LAN preys on 3G revenue

W-LAN preys on 3G revenue - Another day and another article identifying W-LAN (802.11b) as a major threat to 3G revenue.
According to this article, and the report they refer to, W-LAN usage may eat away over 60% of projected 3G revenues. Not only do I agree in principle, I welcome the liberation from corporate control of distribution networks.

Is no news good news? - Not much happening in the wireless world, especially in the European segment. I think it's a classic case of pre-CeBit blues. Everyone is waiting for the massive Consumer Electronics Show in Hannover in 2 weeks time, for their product announcements. Especially now that the 3GSM is over. Expect lot's of news in the W-LAN area, as well as even more news in the Mobile area, with a plethora of new smart-phone devices, that combine the PDA and mobile phone functionalities. Expect tons of new hardware and plug-ins for existing products, and expect a lot of hype about the coming of 3G networks. Vapourware, is the term for it. As a little boy says to Neo in the Matrix "Your spoon does not bend because it is just that, a spoon. Mine bends because there is no spoon, just my mind." Remember, for now, 3G is just in your mind, while 802.11b is something you can go out and but today.
