Also, the system doesn't come bundled with any particular forum or community platform, so any independent community host can integrate the services and individuals can share reputation across various communities.
In other words, the idea is that if you really like (or dislike) some of the stuff I'm writing on this weblog, you can 'pay' me back by rating me here.
If so inclined you can also donate money, which is then forwarded to my favourite charities/organisations.
I'm also getting informal registered as a non-profit there. Informal is the UK non-profit with whom we do our non-profit work. Once they're registered, my favourite non-profit causes are apt to change ;-)
If you're interested in the importance of Social Capital or Whuffie, in volunteer work, or technical fora, Open Source movements etc. have a look at Affero.
We'll see whether it works for me, but at least it's worth trying.
