802.11 announcements galore

The headlines are rampant with new product announcements in the 802.11 area. Most  are in the 802.11a area, providing up-to 54Mbit in  the 5GHz range. With product announcements from almost every major equipment vendor, including Agere Systems (Lucednt Orinoco), Enterasys, SMC, Cisco and Proxim, as well as chip-makers Aetheros, Intel and Intersil.

Unfortunately 802.11a is not yet a European standard, and uses a band that is currently reserved for the competing (largely defunct) HiperLan standard in most European countries.
